The perfect first introduction to basketball.
Western Port Basketball Association’s Mini Steelers program is designed for children aged 3–5 years, providing a fun and positive introduction to basketball through age-appropriate games, activities and movement.
Mini Steelers is all about helping young children become comfortable on the court while developing important motor skills, coordination, confidence and social skills. Through playful activities, children will begin learning basic basketball skills while staying active, making friends and, most importantly, having fun.
Program Duration: 8 Weeks
Session Duration: 30 Minutes
What Will They Learn?
Mini Steelers introduces children to the foundations of basketball while developing skills that support their overall movement and confidence.
Throughout the program, children will have the opportunity to:
- Develop hand-eye coordination and movement skills
- Practise running, jumping, catching, bouncing and basic ball handling
- Learn simple basketball fundamentals
- Build confidence in a fun and supportive environment
- Develop teamwork, communication and social skills
- Become comfortable participating in activities with other children
- Develop a love and enjoyment for basketball
Activities are kept simple, playful and age-appropriate, allowing children to learn at their own pace while building the foundations they will need as they progress through the WPBA basketball pathway.
Parent Participation
Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate on court with their child throughout the session. Your involvement helps create a supportive environment for your child and makes the experience even more enjoyable.
Parents participating on court should bring appropriate footwear, as you’ll be getting involved in the activities too!

Basketballs
Participants will need access to an age-appropriate basketball for the program.
Families can either bring their own basketball, purchased from a sports store, or borrow a basketball for their child to use during the program.
A basketball is required for participation, so please ensure your child has access to one before attending their first session.
Mini Steelers is where the basketball journey begins — helping our youngest players move, play, learn and grow in a fun environment while creating their first positive memories of basketball.

Ford Aussie Hoops
The perfect first step into basketball.
Western Port Basketball Association is proud to deliver Ford Aussie Hoops, Basketball Australia and Basketball Victoria’s introductory basketball program for children aged 5–10 years.
Program Duration: 8 Weeks
Whether your child is picking up a basketball for the very first time or already has some experience, Ford Aussie Hoops provides a fun, supportive and engaging environment where young players can learn the fundamentals, build confidence, make new friends and develop a love for the game.
Sessions are designed around fun, skill development and participation, with children learning the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting, footwork and defence through age-appropriate activities, games and game-like scenarios. There is no structured competition, allowing children to develop their skills and confidence in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Our Groups
Rookies | 5–7 Years
Perfect for children taking their first steps into basketball. Rookies focuses on learning the fundamentals, developing basic basketball skills and building confidence while having fun and enjoying the game.
Girls Aussie Hoops | 5–10 Years
Our girls-only sessions provide a welcoming environment for girls of all experience levels to develop their basketball skills and confidence. Sessions focus on fundamental skills, teamwork and understanding the game, while helping players develop towards a future pathway into domestic basketball.
Why Ford Aussie Hoops?
Ford Aussie Hoops is designed to give children the best possible introduction to basketball. Sessions use age-appropriate equipment, including lowered basketball rings and smaller basketballs, helping young players develop correct fundamentals and good habits from the very beginning.
Throughout the program, players will have the opportunity to:
- Learn and develop fundamental basketball skills
- Build confidence, coordination and movement skills
- Develop teamwork and social skills
- Make new friends and become part of the basketball community
- Participate in fun, engaging and game-based activities

Families can purchase an official Ford Aussie Hoops Pack when registering through PlayHQ, or purchase one directly through the Aussie Basketball Store.
There are multiple pack options available, allowing families to select the option that best suits their child and their needs. Packs include different combinations of official Ford Aussie Hoops equipment and merchandise.
When purchasing your Ford Aussie Hoops Pack, you will be asked to provide the Player’s Name and Association/Club. Please ensure you select or enter Western Port Basketball Association as the Association/Club.

All Abilities Basketball
Everyone deserves the opportunity to play.
Western Port Basketball Association’s All Abilities Basketball Program provides a fun, supportive and inclusive environment where people of all abilities can participate in basketball, build confidence, make friends and enjoy being part of the game.
The program has been a valued part of the WPBA community for almost 20 years, welcoming participants across a range of ages, abilities and experience levels.
Whether participants are new to basketball or already have experience on the court, the program provides an opportunity for everyone to participate, develop and enjoy basketball at their own pace.
Program Duration: Term-Based
Session Duration: 45 Minutes
What Is the Program?
The All Abilities Basketball Program is centred around fun, social and inclusive basketball, with sessions primarily consisting of scrimmages and game-based activities.
Through playing the game, participants have the opportunity to:
- Develop and practise fundamental basketball skills
- Build confidence on the court
- Improve coordination and movement
- Develop teamwork and communication
- Make new friends and build social connections
- Stay active and enjoy playing basketball
- Develop their skills at a pace that suits their individual abilities and needs
The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment, with coaching and activities adapted where appropriate to ensure everyone can be involved and get the most out of their time on court.
A Program For Everyone
The All Abilities Basketball Program welcomes participants across a range of abilities, experience levels and ages.
No previous basketball experience is required. Whether a participant is picking up a basketball for the first time or has been playing for years, the program provides a welcoming, social and supportive environment to enjoy the game.
Our goal is to create a space where participants feel comfortable on court, can build confidence and develop their skills through playing basketball with others.

Both sessions run for 45 minutes and are focused on scrimmages and game-based activities, providing participants with an opportunity to play, socialise and develop their basketball skills in an inclusive environment.
Sessions run during school terms only and do not operate during school holidays.
Program price: $80 per term

WPBA Domestic Development Program
Build confidence. Develop skills.
The Western Port Basketball Association Domestic Development Program is designed for children aged 8–12 years who are currently playing domestic basketball or are ready to make the transition from Aussie Hoops into domestic competition.
The program provides a fun, supportive environment where players can develop their fundamental basketball skills, build confidence and learn how to apply their skills in real game situations.
Whether your child is new to domestic basketball, looking to become more confident on game day or wanting to take on a bigger role within their current team, the Domestic Development Program provides an opportunity to develop the skills and understanding needed to continue progressing.
Program Duration: 8 Weeks
Session Duration: 60 Minutes
What Will They Learn?
The program focuses on developing the fundamental skills that form the foundation of successful basketball.
Throughout the program, players will work on:
- Ball handling and control
- Passing and receiving
- Shooting technique
- Footwork and movement
- Decision making
- 1-on-1 skills
- Defensive fundamentals
- Teamwork and communication
- Applying skills in game-like situations
Sessions are designed to connect skill development with real game situations, helping players understand not only how to perform a skill, but when and why to use it during a game.

The Domestic Development Program is designed for:
- Domestic Players
Players currently participating in domestic basketball who want to improve their skills, build confidence and perform more effectively on game day. - Aussie Hoops Players Transitioning to Domestic
Players who have developed their foundational skills through Aussie Hoops and are ready to take the next step into domestic basketball. The program provides an opportunity to build confidence, develop game-specific skills and become more comfortable with the demands of playing in a domestic competition. - Players Looking to Develop Further
Players who want to take on a bigger role within their current team, improve their overall game or prepare themselves for future opportunities within basketball.
Why Domestic Development?
The transition from learning basketball skills to applying them in a game can be a big step for young players. Our Domestic Development Program helps bridge that gap.
Players will develop their skills in a fun, encouraging and supportive environment, while learning how their skills can be used during game play.
The program aims to help every player become a more confident, capable and knowledgeable basketballer, regardless of their current experience or ability.
