The Somerville Recreation Centre will host Australian Basketball royalty on Saturday Afternoon as the NBL1 Melbourne Tigers coached by Australian Basketball legend Andrew Gaze will face our Youth League and State Championship Men.
Andrew spent 22 seasons in the National Basketball League with stints in both Europe and the NBA. The 5 time olympian retired with 7 NBL Most Valuable Players Trophies and 14 scoring titles before returning to the NBL as head coach of the Sydney Kings. Andrew has recently been appointed the NBL1 Melbourne Tigers Men’s head coach for 2022.
Saturday will be a family outing for the Gaze family as Western Port Steelers Head Coach Mark Gaze is the cousin of Andrew. Mark in his own right is both an accomplished player and coach spending time playing in the NBL and coaching in SEABL & BIG V. Surprisingly enough, Western Port Basketball Association has a strong linage of Gaze blood within the club. Robbie Gaze (another cousin of Andrew) lead the Steelers as captain to Country Basketball Championship in 2004 and was coach of the first ever Western Port Steelers VJBL team to compete to the Victorian Championship division in 2011. Jack Gaze (Mark’s sons & Andrew’s second cousin) is currently playing with Championship Men after a high level career playing SEABL and Big V with the Frankston Blues. Mark’s brother Peter, will be assisting Mark on the sidelines this season as well.
Be sure sure to catch both teams in action this Saturday the 5th of March.
